In common with most cartoonists I tend to work alone in a slightly darkened room with adequate heat and a teapot not far away. Through the miracle of modern technology one can these days be in touch with the world, otherwise you might not be reading this. What's your workplace like?
The modern thought is that at the end of the day the desk must be tidy.
All that tidiness makes for a deeply uninteresting drawing.
We all have different ways of working. My way is to produce roughs first from your brief and there's a fee for them, then a fee to produce the finished items for you and to sell the rights for you to reproduce what I have drawn. The fee for the roughs will be jolly reasonable, but no rights to the work are assigned whatsoever.
The fee for the rights and the finished drawing will depend on the use of the drawings, so expect to pay more for all rights and less for limited. Most people only need one use rights rather than "unlimited all rights world wide for ever more no matter what", so my fee is again, normally jolly reasonable.
All work is quoted first and no rights are assigned to work done by me until I have been paid in full. That's important! Whatever you do please do not use the work until it has been agreed and paid for.
I hope that helps.
